Text 1 - Speaking in Many Tongues
Giuseppe Mezzofanti (1774-1849) was an italian Cardinal who was perhaps the best
language learner ever. He spoke more than thirty eight language fluently. He
never left Italy but he learnt to speak these language without an accent. People from all over the world
came to talk to him in their mother
tongue. All of them were amazed by his fluency.
At the age of 12, Mezzofanti spoke his native Italian, as
well as German, Greek, Latin and at least five other language. Then he learned
Arabic, Rusian, Hindi, Old English, and Maltese. He also learned Chinese. This
was the hardest language for him to learn. It took him four months.
Some stories say he also spoke thirty other languages
quite well and that he could understand another twenty. For example, Tibetan
and Icelandic. Another story says that he heard there were two foreigners in a
prison in Rome. So he learnt their language in one night and spoke to them the
next morning.
It is hard to know if all these stories are true. Some
people for example ask,”how did he learn Old English without meeting anyone who
spoke it?” or “Did he really learn a language in a few weeks or in one night?”
We don’t know for sure, but we can say for

Text 3 – When teens make BAD DECISIONS
PSYCHOLOGISTS at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA did an
interesting experiment. They asked teenagers to play a video game that involved
car driving. They could win prizes for driving fast. But the faster they drove,
the bigger their risk was of losing the prize money. Half the time, the
teenagers played the game on their own, and half of the time the psychologists
told them that their friends were in the room next door, watching them. The
results were fascinating: when the
teens played the game on their own, they made much better decisions. When they
thought their friends were watching, their driving was much more dangerous.
They drove faster, had more accidents, and often didn't stop at red lights.

Text 4 - Friendship myths
Everyone wants to have friends, and friendships are important to teenagers all over the
world. However, when people start a friendship, they sometimes expect too much
from it. Here are five things about friendship that some people believe are
true. But in fact they aren't – they are myths.
Burcu, Istanbul, Turkey said, “Nobody's perfect, so why do we
think friends can be perfect? We all make mistakes, so it's only normal that
there are times when good friends make mistakes, too. Perhaps you think that a
really good friend always knows what you need. That's wrong – be careful! Sometimes
you need to say to your friends, 'Please do this' or 'Don't do that'. Don't
forget that there are times when your friends are stressed or unhappy, too. Then they can't help
you the way you would like them to.”
Flávia, São Paulo, Brazil said “There can be times in your life
when you've got a lot of friends, and other times when you've only got one or
two. Maybe you haven't got any friends right now because, for example, you're in a new
city or school. When you haven't got any friends, it's important to wait and be
patient. Make sure you're a friendly person – so other people want to make
friends with you!”
Luca, Florence, Italy said, “No, they don't! It takes time
to build a good friendship. You don't
want to tell your friend everything about yourself on the first day of your
friendship. You and your friends want to share some things. But it's important
to remember that
there are other things that you don't want to share and that's fine! Don't feel
bad about it.”
Fernanda, Quito, Ecuador said, “You want to be a good friend,
right? To build a good friendship, it's important to have fun together, to
listen to your friends when they've got a problem, to help them when they need
you, or just to go and watch a film together, or play some sport. And that takes
time! That's why I think it's better to have one or two friends, and not a lot
of friends.”
Nikolay, St Petersburg, Russia said, “It's not a
good idea to wait for others to make you happy. There are times when you're
happy, and other times when you're sad. And when you're not happy, try to
think, 'What can I do to stop this? How can I help myself?' Friendship is a
place to share happiness, but there may be times when
you and your friends aren't happy. And that's OK.”
